120 full time river warriors cleaning 200 rivers on a daily basis in Indonesia on a mission to stop plastic from going into the ocean. [📹 Sungai Watch] —————————————————— The river warriors are part of a non-governmental organization called Sungai Watch, which was founded in 2020 by three siblings who grew up in Bali: Gary, Sam, and Kelly Bencheghib. Sungai Watch aims to empower local communities to take action against plastic pollution and to monitor the health of their rivers using technology and citizen science. They have installed more than 180 river barriers across Bali and Java, which are made of bamboo and nets and can capture up to 90 percent of the plastic waste flowing in the rivers. The river warriors collect the plastic from the river barriers every day and sort it into different categories, such as bottles, bags, cups, and wrappers. They then weigh the plastic and record the data using a mobile app. The plastic waste is either sent to recycling facilities, upcycled into new products, or transformed into eco-bricks, which are plastic bottles stuffed with non-recyclable plastic that can be used as building materials. Sungai Watch also educates the local communities about the impacts of plastic pollution and the benefits of reducing, reusing, and recycling plastic. They also collaborate with local governments, businesses, and schools to implement waste management solutions and policies. Sungai Watch estimates that they have prevented more than 1.3 million kilograms of plastic from reaching the ocean since their inception. They also claim that they have improved the water quality and biodiversity of the rivers they have cleaned Sungai Watch hopes to expand their operations to other regions in Indonesia and Southeast Asia, and to inspire more people to join their mission of creating a plastic-free future.
